6 emerging trends in the Short-to-medium run corrugated box packaging market due to COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic change in how we shop, for most countries back in March 2020 the population was placed under strict lockdown rules and instructed to leave home for non-essential reasons only. Little did we know that at the time this virus would unfortunately claim the lives of many people, and also many businesses. Despite the disruption some industries would see a dramatic rise in trade. Industries such as cleaning products, electronics, and office furniture to name a few experienced significant growth, the result of which has led to the following trends...

An increase in the demand for shortrun boxes
Box users are now requesting a larger variety of boxstyles and sizes. The reason being is that when a customer orders online, a supplier must pack the item in another box to ensure the inner box and product is not damaged in transit.

Once upon a time, a sheet plant would make larger runs of fewer box styles, mainly to carry the stock to the final destination within the distribution network. However due to e-commerce trends the demand for shorter run boxes has grown significantly. A variety of smaller boxes are needed by an increasing number of customers. The Smithers new report claims that the market will grow approximately 3.7% annually until 2023 and that the Electrical goods end-user sector will see the highest growth.

A demand for Boxes that best fit YOUR product

Imagine stocking 1,000s of products of varying size and you need a box that best fits each one up to a certain size/ shape. This can seem like an impossible task, which often leads to stocking too many boxes, including void-fill and having outer packaging that is too big for the product. Shortrun machines are developed to reduce waste, free-up space in your warehouse by enabling you to have the right box for the product at hand.

Increasing demand for Fanfold technology

Flexible packaging is much higher on the list of priorities right now, innovations (such as Fanfold) are a step in the right direction as boxmakers won’t need to store corrugated sheets. Fanfold innovation allows for a roll of corrugated sheet board to be fed directly into the shortrun boxmaker.

The Digital Print and customer branding experience

Business worldwide are continuously offering a better customer experience, this now encompasses dispatch time and also the branding on the packaging. Bold, thoughtful designs are the norm. Clever instructions for Returns Policies are commonplace as well as instructions for customers to reuse and recycle their packaging. Digital Print has simply become part of the customer service experience. Think about a product that you recently ordered, did the box branding change your impression of the company you ordered from? Highly likey!

Sustainable packaging, sustainable shipping

As consumers expect more efficient packaging, suppliers are often put under pressure to meet these demands. for example, reducing the use of plastics, and also provide a shipping service that is quick and cost-effective.
Couriers have become more efficient, and have incorporated cubic measurement (LxWxH) pricing, also known as “right-weighting”. A right-sized box generally results in more packages being carried in a vessel, less trips. Less waste and overall a better customer “unboxing” experience.

An increasing need for versatile quick-set boxmakers

The pandemic has not only shifted the need for Just-In-Time box production, but it has put forward the need for boxes to be made quickly for QUICK despatch. Time-critical consignments and large orders mean that machine down-time is a major disadvantage. Distributors are securing shortrun machines to enable quick-set, tool-less boxmaking. The ability to make 100’s of 0401’s boxes to a handful pallet boxes is particularly beneficial.
